The Specialty Shop was founded by Scott and Sherri Weaver
in 1999 after they both left there previous employer
Roberts Drapery Workroom. Scott was the general manager
of Roberts Draperies for over 16 years while Sherri was the
office manager overseeing all accounting and payroll aspects
as well as quoting customers and writing up orders.
The Specialty Shop started in the basement of
of a local used furniture store in the R.G. Landry building
in Glens Falls, N.Y. with only Scott, Sherri and one part
time employee and only two small sewing machines and
a few tables. Since the company was started with only
money from savings the owners gambled that word of
their departure from Roberts Drapery would spread and
customers would follow suit. This gamble paid off!
As word spread of Scott and Sherri's departure
from Roberts more customers followed and so did long
long time employees. In 2000 Roberts Drapery Workroom
was sold to a Vermont based business, Warner's Upholstery
and the former owner Robert Spiegel retired. The new
ownership did not go well for an already failing business
and Roberts Drapery Workroom closed its doors in 2003.
With the largest and only local competitor gone
The Specialty Shop hired the balance of Roberts Draperies
employees and purchased most of the equipment. After
spending 5 years in the basement it was time to expand!
On June 1st, 2004 The Specialty Shop relocated back to
its roots in Hudson Falls, N.Y.
When the economy was at a all time low in 2008 The Specialty Shop changed from only working with Interior Designers on a wholesale level to a full retail store offering the same services for 50% less in order to survive with the closing of the most popular Design Houses in our area. The joint owners Scott and Sherri Weaver decided to change the name from The Specialty Shop to Factory Direct Window Treatments. In August of 2010 Factory Direct Window Treatments moved to South Glens Falls to expand. The new location features the main floor as a full design center and showroom and the remaining 2 floors for manufacturing.
